SharePoint Column Level Security - Enhanced Data Security for your SharePoint

Column Level Security (CLS) is a SharePoint hosted app which helps administrators apply column level security to SharePoint Lists and Libraries. Through CLS, you can hide columns for specific Users/Groups or make columns Read-only for specific Users/Groups per your business needs. This app works on web scope and needs to be installed on each web(site/subsite) as required.

 

SharePoint Column Level Security Features
  • Microsoft
    New Form
    While creating a New Form, Columns which are set with Read Only Permission through CLS app, a user will not be able to insert those Columns’ data in a new form.
     
    For the Columns, which are set as Hide through CLS app, users will not be able to view or insert those Columns’ data in a new form.

    Edit Form

    While editing an existing form, Columns which are set with Read Only Permission, a user will not be able to modify those Columns’ data.

     

    Whereas for Columns which are set as Hide, users will not be able to view the data for those Columns.

    View Form
    Columns which are set as Read, CLS app will make those Read Only in view form.
     
    The columns which are set as Hide, CLS app will make those Columns hidden.

    All items view, Custom views
    Columns which are set as Read, CLS app will make those Read Only in all Items view.
     
    The columns which are set as Hide, CLS app will make those Columns hidden in all items view.

    Datasheet view & Gantt view
    Columns which are set as Read, CLS app will make those Columns hidden in Datasheet and Gantt view.
     
    The columns which are set as Hide, CLS app will make those Columns hidden in Datasheet and Gantt view.

    Export to Excel

    If hide permission is applied to any column for a set of Users and/or a Groups, then “Export to Excel” link in ribbon will be hidden for those Users/Groups.

    Alert Me
    If hide permission is applied for any column of a User and/or Groups, then “Alert me” ribbon button will be hidden for that User/Groups.
     
    Though the previously set alerts for that list will not be removed, admin must take care of those alerts.

    Attach file

    If read or hide permission is applied on Attachment column, then “Attach file” ribbon button will be hidden for those Users/Groups.
